Outreach Ministry

The outreach ministry team offers many volunteer opportunities to help our community as a congregation. Many of these offer a chance for your to be actively involved with “hands on” work. These and other programs we also support financially.  There is something for everyone if you choose to be involved.

Backpack Buddies

Backpack Buddies is a community-wide program that provides a weekend bag of food for 650 at-risk elementary children. This volunteer program is in its 14th year and is supported by 25+ churches and civic groups. Our church packs and delivers about 100 bags of food to a school each week during the school year.

Trinity House Food Pantry

We have several volunteers who work three-hour shifts for 10:00am-1:00pm once a month helping staff Trinity House which is operated by Trinity Lutheran Church. They work alongside other volunteers to pack and hand out a monthly bag of groceries to those who meet the pantry guidelines.  Occasional food drives help support this important service.

Interfaith Shelter of Hope

This is an opportunity to volunteer for a shift at the homeless shelter where the mission is to “provide a safe place for the guests to sleep from 9:00pm-7:00am each night”.  Our church provides volunteers each Thursday night, three hour shifts 8-11pm, 11-2am, 2-5am and 5-8am.  Typically, they volunteer once every three weeks depending on the number of overall volunteers.  Training is available for those interested.  The congregation here at First United Methodist also donate shelf stable foods that can easily be consumed without electricity, such as granola bars, canned meats and bottled water.

Camp Horizon

Each October, a group travels to Camp Horizon, a Methodist camp located near Arkansas City, Kansas to help close down the camp after their summer activities.  Both skilled and unskilled tasks are completed during this 4-5 day trip.  This is a great chance for fellowship and service.

Local Outreach

We also help with financial support to local organizations such as the Alliance Against Family Violence, Catholic Charities, and Saint Vincent’s Clinic.

Council on Aging

We have done several projects for clients at Council on Aging. These are typically things like small home repair or building a ramp for someone who has limited access to the outside.
